Bookkeep Alternatives and Competitors, With Bookkeep Pricing and What Bookkeep Reconciles
Bookkeep started in 2018 as a bookkeeping firm in Brooklyn, shipped a Square accounting app into the QuickBooks App Store in December 2019, added Shopify and Amazon in 2020 and raised a seed round led by Lerer Hippeau in May 2021. That history shows in the product. It is built by people who closed retail books by hand, and it is very good at the part they hated: turning a day of gross sales, discounts, refunds, shipping and sales tax into one clean summarized journal entry instead of 4,000 order-level lines, then posting it for you. It also matches each Shopify, Amazon or Square payout to the deposit in your bank, splits payouts across accounts by store or franchise, and files sales tax in all 50 states through Avalara. Where buyers get surprised is the billing model. Every plan is priced per entity, the tier is decided by the annual revenue running through the apps you connect, Bookkeep re-queries that revenue every three months and moves you up or down automatically, and it says plainly that it does not sell the Pro or Advanced plans without the sales tax service. Reconciler is a different job on the same books. It connects your bank feed, your corporate cards and your Stripe, PayPal or Square payouts alongside a QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite ledger with read access only, matches both sides line by line, and writes a plain English reason for every pair. It never posts a journal entry and never files a return. If nothing is in your books yet, Bookkeep is the tool that puts it there. If everything is in your books and you have to prove it ties out, that is the page you are on.
Read-only · Never moves money
In short
Bookkeep is ecommerce and retail accounting automation. It reads Shopify, Amazon, Square, Toast, Stripe, PayPal and a dozen other channels, posts one summarized daily journal entry per channel into QuickBooks Online, Xero, Zoho Books, NetSuite, Sage Intacct or Intuit Enterprise Suite, matches each payout to the deposit that lands in the bank, and files sales tax. Published pricing runs from $19 a month on Lite to $1,199 on Unlimited, per entity, and the plan is set by the annual revenue of the apps you connect. Teams look for Bookkeep alternatives when the plan auto-upgrades as revenue grows, when the Pro tier forces the sales tax service into the bill, or when the real problem is not creating entries but proving the bank, the corporate cards and the processor payouts agree with a ledger that is already populated. Reconciler does that second job read-only, from $149 per month billed yearly for the plan with ledger connections.

Honest fit
Which one you should actually pick
Pick Bookkeep when
Bookkeep is the better buy when your books are not populated yet. If a day of Shopify, Amazon, Square or Toast activity has to become a correct summarized journal entry with gross sales, discounts, refunds, shipping and sales tax split out, posted every morning without anyone touching it, that is the product. Add sales tax filing and payout splitting and it covers a multi-location retailer or franchise group end to end, at a price that starts below anything in reconciliation software.
Pick Reconciler when
Reconciler is the better buy when the entries already exist and somebody has to prove they are right. It connects your bank feed, corporate cards and Stripe, PayPal or Square payouts next to QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite with read access only, matches both sides, flags what is missing or duplicated, and writes a plain English reason for every pair. One price, no revenue tier to cross, no service bundled into the plan, and nothing ever posted to your ledger.
Questions people ask
Bookkeep alternatives, answered
How much does Bookkeep cost?
Bookkeep publishes six plans, priced per entity: Lite $19, Starter $49, Growth $99, Pro $199, Advanced $499 and Unlimited $1,199 a month, with two months free on annual billing. Lite covers up to $200,000 of annual revenue on one sales channel and Pro up to $5 million across five. Checked on bookkeep.com/pricing, September 22, 2026.
What are the best Bookkeep alternatives?
It depends which Bookkeep job you are replacing. For summarized ecommerce journal entries, the direct alternatives are A2X, Synder, Link My Books, Webgility and MyWorks. For sales tax filing, Avalara and TaxJar do it standalone. If the job is proving the bank, the cards and the processor payouts agree with a ledger that is already populated, that is reconciliation software rather than a sync tool, and Reconciler starts at $149 per month billed yearly for the plan with ledger connections.
Why does my Bookkeep plan keep changing?
Because the tier is set by revenue, not by choice. Bookkeep queries the annual revenue of each connected app every three months, adds it up across the apps you have connected, and automatically upgrades or downgrades your plan before the billing date so it matches that level. Revenue outside the connected apps does not count. It is worth modelling the next tier up before you connect another channel.
Does Bookkeep do bank reconciliation?
Partly. Bookkeep matches each Shopify, Amazon, Square or other payout to the deposit that lands in your bank and posts each deposit as its own entry so the bank reconciliation inside QuickBooks or Xero clears cleanly. What it does not do is connect to your bank or credit card accounts directly and reconcile the statement itself against the general ledger, which is the job a reconciliation tool does.
Can I buy the Bookkeep Pro plan without sales tax filing?
No. Bookkeep states on its pricing page that it does not offer the Pro or Advanced plans without the sales tax service, and does not discount them if you choose not to use it. If you already file through Avalara or TaxJar, or you sell somewhere the service does not cover, you are paying for a service you will not use once you pass the Growth tier.
Does Bookkeep integrate with NetSuite or Sage Intacct?
Yes, on the Growth plan at $99 a month and above. Lite and Starter post to QuickBooks Online, Xero and Zoho Books only. Growth adds automated posting to NetSuite, Sage Intacct and Intuit Enterprise Suite plus inter-app mapping and an onboarding session. Reconciler connects QuickBooks, Xero and NetSuite read-only on its $149 plan.
Is Bookkeep read-only?
No, and it is not meant to be. Bookkeep writes summarized journal entries into your accounting system every day, which is the entire point of the product, and the Advanced tier adds fulfillment-based revenue recognition entries. Reconciler holds read access only: it reads the bank, the cards, the processors and the ledger, matches them and reports, and never posts an entry or moves money.
Bookkeep vs Reconciler: which one do I actually need?
Ask whether your problem is getting numbers into the books or proving the numbers in the books are right. If last week's Shopify sales are not in QuickBooks yet, buy Bookkeep. If they are in QuickBooks and nobody can show that the deposits, the card charges and the processor payouts match what is recorded, buy Reconciler. Plenty of teams run both: one posts, the other checks.
Does Bookkeep have a free trial?
Yes. Bookkeep offers a 14 day free trial of any plan with no credit card required, and you can set up more than one entity during the trial. Historical journal entries, meaning anything dated more than 15 days before signup, are excluded from the trial and cost $0.35 each once you start paid service.
