Puzzle Accounting Alternatives and Puzzle Pricing for Startups That Keep QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite

Puzzle is an accounting system, not a reconciliation add-on, and that is the first thing to settle before you compare it with anything. It sells itself as a modern general ledger for startups, with AI categorization, cash and accrual books drawn from the same ledger, and AI agents that reconcile accounts. Stripe, Mercury, Brex, Ramp, Gusto, Rippling, Deel and Bill.com connect natively, and a bank that does not connect can be loaded from a CSV template. The pricing is public. Checked on October 5, 2026, Starter is $30 a month, Core $72, Complete $120 and Scale $360, or $24, $58, $96 and $288 a month billed yearly, a 20% saving, with a 14-day trial of Complete. Two details matter more than the headline. First, the pricing page lists AI-powered reconciliations and revenue recognition on Complete, so the plan most people comparing Puzzle with reconciliation software actually need is the $120 one, not the $30 one. Second, Puzzle is where your books move to. It offers a QuickBooks import, calls Core its QuickBooks replacement, and handles more than one entity through a consolidation integration rather than inside the ledger. Its pricing page charges $149 per system for migration while its QuickBooks page advertises free migration, so ask which applies before you sign. PayPal and Square do not appear on its integrations page. So the decision is about the ledger. If you are an early-stage US company happy to leave QuickBooks and want bookkeeping, statements and burn reporting in one product, Puzzle is a well priced choice. If QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite is staying, along with the accountant who closes it, Reconciler is the narrower tool. It connects the ledger, Stripe, PayPal or Square read-only, takes any other bank or card statement as a CSV, matches both sides line by line and writes a plain English reason under every pair.

In short

Puzzle is an AI accounting system and general ledger for US startups that replaces QuickBooks rather than connecting to it. Checked on October 5, 2026, Puzzle publishes four plans: Starter at $30 a month, Core at $72, Complete at $120 and Scale at $360, or $24, $58, $96 and $288 a month billed yearly, with a 14-day trial of Complete. AI-powered reconciliations and revenue recognition are listed from Complete up, several entities run through a consolidation integration, and partner bookkeeping starts at $171 a month. Buyers look for Puzzle alternatives when they want to keep QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite, when PayPal or Square payouts need tying out, or when they only need the reconciliation. Reconciler does that read-only on the ledger you already have, from $89 a month billed yearly with a ledger connected.

Honest fit

Which one you should actually pick

Pick Puzzle when

Puzzle is the better buy for an early-stage US startup that is ready to leave QuickBooks for an AI-run ledger and wants categorization, cash and accrual statements, burn and runway reporting and revenue recognition in one subscription. With a published price list, a 14-day trial and plans from $24 a month billed yearly, it is one of the more transparent offers among the new AI ledgers, and the Complete plan at $96 a month billed yearly is the one to price.

Pick Reconciler when

Reconciler is the better buy when the ledger is staying. You keep QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite and the accountant who closes them, PayPal or Square payouts need tying out next to Stripe, or you run several entities and want the exceptions in one view. It connects read-only, explains every match and flags every exception, from $89 a month billed yearly.

Questions people ask

Puzzle alternatives, answered

How much does Puzzle accounting cost?

Puzzle publishes four software plans: Starter at $30 a month, Core at $72, Complete at $120 and Scale at $360, or $24, $58, $96 and $288 a month billed yearly. AI-powered reconciliations and revenue recognition are listed from Complete up. There is a 14-day trial of Complete, and migration is $149 per system. Checked on puzzle.io, October 5, 2026.

Is Puzzle accounting free?

No. Puzzle no longer lists a free plan. Its pricing page starts at Starter, $30 a month or $24 billed yearly, and says Starter is free for the first two months. Directory listings that still show a $0 tier are out of date, even though an older FAQ page on Puzzle's own site still asks why Puzzle is free.

What are the best Puzzle alternatives?

It depends on whether you want a new ledger. If you do, buyers compare Puzzle with Digits, QuickBooks Online, Xero and Kick. If you want people to do the books, Pilot and Zeni sell bookkeeping services. If you want to keep QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite, reconciliation software such as Reconciler proves the bank, card and payout activity agrees with them.

Is Puzzle a replacement for QuickBooks?

Yes. Puzzle describes itself as a general ledger and complete double-entry accounting system, labels its Core plan your QuickBooks replacement, and offers an import from QuickBooks. Businesses move their books to Puzzle; it is not designed to run alongside QuickBooks Online as a second system.

Does Puzzle do bank reconciliation?

Yes. Puzzle says AI agents handle reconciliation automatically, and its pricing page lists AI-powered reconciliations as a Complete plan feature, at $120 a month or $96 billed yearly. The reconciliation runs inside Puzzle's own ledger, so you get it after moving your books to Puzzle, not on top of QuickBooks or Xero.

Does Puzzle integrate with PayPal or Square?

Not natively. Checked on October 5, 2026, Puzzle's integrations page lists Stripe, Mercury, Brex, Ramp, Gusto, Rippling, Deel and Bill.com, among others, and does not list PayPal or Square. Payouts from those processors would reach Puzzle through the bank account they land in or a CSV import, without the fee and refund detail behind each deposit.

Does Puzzle support multiple entities?

Through an integration. Puzzle lists multi-entity via integration from the Core plan up, with consolidation handled by a separate consolidation tool, and its 50% faster close money-back guarantee excludes multi-entity setups. Groups that need several entities in one place usually compare that against tools built for it.

How does Puzzle compare with Digits?

Both are AI ledgers that replace QuickBooks rather than sit beside it. Puzzle runs $30 to $360 a month with a 20% yearly discount and a 14-day trial; Digits lists $65, $100 and $250 a month with a 30-day trial. Puzzle adds revenue recognition on Complete and sells partner bookkeeping, so price the plan that includes the features you need.

Do I need Puzzle or Reconciler?

Ask whether you are changing ledgers. If you are a startup happy to move your books onto a new AI ledger, Puzzle covers bookkeeping, statements, reporting and reconciliation in one subscription. If you are staying on QuickBooks Online, Xero or NetSuite and need proof the books tie out, Reconciler adds that without moving anything.
