Read-only ยท Never moves money
The short answer: the core of QuickBooks Online Accountant stays free. Intuit is replacing it with Intuit Accountant Suite, whose Core plan costs nothing, and the two paid pieces arrive in January 2027. Accelerate costs $149 a month per firm from January 20, 2027, and the Books Close add-on costs $8 per onboarded client per month for up to 50 clients, or $6 per onboarded client above 50, from January 21, 2027. Both are free while the beta runs. Your clients' own QuickBooks Online subscriptions are separate, and ProAdvisors get 30% off them.
Every Intuit figure below was read on Intuit's own Accountant Suite pricing page, ProAdvisor pricing page and help center on September 27, 2026, in USD. Intuit has already moved these dates once, so check the live page before you budget for 2027.
How much does QuickBooks Online Accountant cost?
QuickBooks Online Accountant costs nothing for the firm, and its replacement keeps a free tier. Intuit Accountant Suite Core is listed as Free and includes client file management, the inbox, role-based access, multiple tabs, the Resolution Center, the tax prep integration and 200 Intuit Intelligence prompts a month. Money only enters the picture if you add Accelerate, Books Close, or both.
Here is the full structure as Intuit publishes it:
| Piece | Price | Billed on | Starts charging | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intuit Accountant Suite Core | Free | Firm | Never | Client files, inbox, roles, Resolution Center, tax prep integration, 200 AI prompts a month |
| Intuit Accountant Suite Accelerate | $149 a month | Firm | January 20, 2027 ($0 during beta) | 1,000 AI prompts a month, customizable Client Insights dashboards, client groups, user groups, portfolio-level insights |
| Books Close add-on | $8 per onboarded client a month up to 50 clients, $6 per onboarded client over 50 | Per client onboarded to Books Close | January 21, 2027 (free during beta) | Close templates, file review, preparer, reviewer and approver roles, reconciliation tasks launched from the workflow |
| Client QuickBooks Online subscriptions | $38 to $340 a month list, 30% off through ProAdvisor pricing | Client, or firm if you bill wholesale | Now | The client's own books |
Is QuickBooks Online Accountant being discontinued?
Yes. Intuit is replacing QuickBooks Online Accountant with Intuit Accountant Suite, and Accounting Today reported in February 2026 that the transition would begin in summer 2026 with QuickBooks Online Accountant discontinued in December 2026 and firms moved onto the free Core plan. As of September 27, 2026, Intuit's pricing page still lets you switch back to QuickBooks Online Accountant, so the old interface is available for now.
The billing dates have already slipped once. When Intuit first announced the suite, the free beta of Accelerate and Books Close was due to end on April 30, 2026, with charges from May 1. The live pricing page now shows January 20, 2027 for Accelerate and January 21, 2027 for Books Close. That is useful for planning: you have one more close season to decide whether Books Close earns $8 a client before the first invoice.
How much does Books Close cost per client?
Books Close costs $8 per onboarded client per month if you onboard up to 50 clients, and $6 per onboarded client per month above 50, starting January 21, 2027. It is billed only for clients you onboard to Books Close, not for every client in your practice list. Intuit keeps your Books Close data for seven years after you cancel, according to its FAQ.
Read literally, Intuit's wording prices the whole book at one rate: $8 each at 50 clients or fewer, $6 each once you pass 50. If that is how it bills, the price has a cliff in it, and a firm with 51 clients pays less than a firm with 50. Ask Intuit to confirm in writing whether the $6 rate applies to every client or only to clients 51 and up, because the two readings differ by $100 a month at 100 clients.
| Clients onboarded to Books Close | Books Close per month | Books Close per year | With Accelerate added |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | $80 | $960 | $229 a month |
| 25 | $200 | $2,400 | $349 a month |
| 50 | $400 | $4,800 | $549 a month |
| 51, whole book at $6 | $306 | $3,672 | $455 a month |
| 100, whole book at $6 | $600 | $7,200 | $749 a month |
| 100, only clients over 50 at $6 | $700 | $8,400 | $849 a month |
Accelerate is optional. Books Close is sold as an add-on, and Intuit's help center says you need the Books Close add-on to reconcile accounts without leaving the suite. A firm that only wants the close workflow can run Core plus Books Close.
What does Books Close actually do?
Books Close is a month-end close workflow for your QuickBooks clients. Each close period opens a file review page with pre-close items you can customize, three workflow roles named preparer, reviewer and approver (you can rename them), and a pipeline view of where every client sits. When you onboard a client, the suite adds a reconciliation task for each bank and credit card account automatically, and you can add non-cash accounts yourself.
The reconciliation step is worth reading carefully. Intuit's help article says selecting View/Reconcile "opens the reconciliation page your firm uses for the account." In other words Books Close organizes, assigns and tracks the reconciliation, and the matching itself still happens on the QuickBooks reconcile screen, by the same person, the same way as before. It does not read a Stripe, PayPal, Square or Shopify payout and break it back into the sales, fees and refunds behind it, and Intuit documents it only for QuickBooks clients, not for Xero or NetSuite files.
For a firm whose clients are mostly service businesses with a checking account and a card, that is enough, and at $8 a client it is cheap structure. For ecommerce, SaaS and marketplace clients, it tracks a reconciliation task that remains the slowest part of the close.
Is Books Close worth it compared with other per-client close tools?
Books Close is worth it if your firm is all-QuickBooks and your biggest problem is visibility: who is closing which client and what is still open. At $8 a client it is priced in the same band as the review tools firms already use. It is weaker than those tools on automated file checks, and none of them, Books Close included, matches the bank line by line for you.
| Tool | Price per client per month | 25 clients | Ledgers | What it adds | Matches bank, cards and payouts to the ledger |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intuit Books Close | $8 up to 50, $6 above | $200 | QuickBooks | Close workflow, roles, file review, reconciliation tasks | No, opens the QuickBooks reconcile page |
| Xenett | $7.50 review, $10 Workflow | $187.50 or $250 | QuickBooks Online, Xero | 50+ automated review checks, practice management | No, flags discrepancies |
| Uncat | $9 | $225 | QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Xero | Texts and emails clients about uncategorized transactions, receipt collection | No |
| Double (formerly Keeper) | $10, $25 or $50 per connected client | From $250 | QuickBooks Online, Xero | File review, close workflow, client questions | No |
| Reconciler | Flat plans, not per client | $399 on Scale, billed yearly | QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite | Reads bank, card and processor records separately and explains each match | Yes, read-only |
Xenett and Uncat prices were read on their own sites on September 26 and 27, 2026, and Double's on September 25, 2026. We keep full comparisons of the two most common alternatives: Xenett alternatives and pricing per client and Uncat alternatives and pricing.
How much do QuickBooks Online subscriptions cost through a ProAdvisor?
ProAdvisors get 30% off the base price of QuickBooks Online. Billed to the firm, the discount is ongoing; billed directly to the client, it lasts 12 months and then the client pays list. Intuit calls the firm-billed ProAdvisor discount its only ongoing discount, which is why most firms that resell QuickBooks bill wholesale.
| Plan | List price a month | ProAdvisor price a month | Discount length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple Start | $38 | $26.60 | Ongoing if firm-billed, 12 months if client-billed |
| Essentials | $85 | $59.50 | Same |
| Plus | $140 | $98 | Same |
| Advanced | $340 | $238 | Same |
QuickBooks Workforce and QuickBooks Time get the same 30% off the base price plus 15% off per-employee fees. None of this changes with the move to Accountant Suite: the suite prices the firm's workspace, and these prices are the client's books.
What will an accounting firm pay in 2027?
A 25-client QuickBooks firm that stays on Core pays nothing to Intuit for its own workspace. Adding Books Close for all 25 clients costs $200 a month from January 2027, and adding Accelerate on top takes it to $349. The client subscriptions come on top and are usually re-billed to the client. For most firms, the real 2027 decision is whether Books Close replaces a review tool you already pay for or sits beside it.
Three scenarios cover most small firms:
- Service clients, one bank and one card each. Core plus Books Close is probably all the close software you need. The QuickBooks reconcile screen handles a checking account with 80 transactions a month fine.
- A mix of QuickBooks and Xero clients. Books Close only covers the QuickBooks side, so a cross-ledger review tool such as Xenett or Double stays in the stack, and paying for both on the same client is duplication.
- Ecommerce, SaaS or marketplace clients. The reconciliation is the bottleneck, not the checklist. A payout from Stripe or Shopify lands in the bank as one net number while QuickBooks holds hundreds of sales, fees and refunds, and no close tracker fixes that match.
Larger firms add a staffing question. Books Close assigns preparer, reviewer and approver on each client, which works well until one reviewer is carrying forty closes in the same week. Firms at that size often end up routing work across the team by workload and skill rather than by a fixed name on each client, so the close does not stall behind one person.
Where Reconciler fits for a QuickBooks firm
Reconciler is the tool for the clients where tie-out, not tracking, eats the close. It connects to the client's bank feed, cards, Stripe, PayPal and Square read-only, reads each one as its own record, matches every line against QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite, and writes a plain English reason next to each match so the reviewer can sign off without redoing the work. Exceptions land in a queue with the amount and the likely cause.
It does not replace Books Close and is not priced per client, so you would not put every client on it. Growth is $149 a month billed yearly with QuickBooks, Xero and NetSuite connections and unlimited team members, and Scale at $399 adds multi-entity reconciliation for a firm running several client files. The usual pattern is Books Close or a review tool across the whole book, and Reconciler on the handful of clients whose processor payouts take a day to tie out each month. Our guide to reconciliation software for accountants prices ten firm tools at 10 clients if you are building the full stack, and the QuickBooks reconciliation integration page shows what Reconciler reads from a QuickBooks file.
Is Intuit Accountant Suite free?
The Core plan of Intuit Accountant Suite is free and stays free after the beta. Accelerate becomes $149 a month on January 20, 2027, and Books Close becomes $8 or $6 per onboarded client a month on January 21, 2027. If you do nothing, your firm lands on Core and pays nothing for its own workspace.
Do I have to pay for Books Close to reconcile client accounts?
No. You can still reconcile any client in QuickBooks Online itself at no extra cost. What Books Close adds is launching that reconciliation from inside the Accountant Suite close workflow, with the task, the reviewer and the sign-off tracked per client. Intuit's help center states the add-on is required to reconcile without leaving the suite.
Is Books Close available for Xero clients?
Intuit documents Books Close only for QuickBooks clients, and the reconciliation step opens the QuickBooks reconciliation page. A firm with Xero clients will need a separate close or review tool for those files, which is one reason cross-ledger tools such as Xenett, Double and Reconciler stay on firm shortlists.
